Paul Ayoub

Paul Ayoub, 54, of Rockville, passed away December 28, 2017.  He was born in Takoma Park, Maryland on October 25, 1963 to Samira and the late Sliman Ayoub.  Paul leaves behind  a loving wife, Sandy Ayoub, three children; Paul (Katie) Ayoub, Anthony (Carmen) Ayoub and Amanda (Jamil) Hishmeh; seven grandchildren Khylee, Pauly, Maya, James, Ava, Natalie and Eden; three sisters; Rima (Kenny) Denham, Laura Ayoub and Nancy (Charlie) Ayoub; and one brother Michael (Mireille) Ayoub.  Paul also leaves behind a whole host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and strangers who probably never knew his name but felt his love and compassion for people through his generosity.  Paul was preceded in death by his father Sliman Ayoub and his sister Elein Ayoub-Apostolakos.  Relatives and friends may call at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 4335 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC, Monday, January 1, 2018 from 4 to 6 pm where Funeral Service will be held at 6 pm.  Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 1:30 pm.

Sarah Sullivan Willging (Age 72), of Silver Spring, MD, died suddenly of natural causes on Thursday, December 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.  Beloved wife of James Willging; mother of Melissa Fountain, Katie O’Neil, Jenny Gaymon, Maria Kennedy, Lucy Lattus, Margaret Lilly, Clare Hart, and Jimmy Willging; sister of Dan and Terry Sullivan; also survived by 11 grandchildren.

Born to Dorrance and Dorothy Sullivan in Dubuque, IA.  Sarah received her Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama at Clarke College.  She moved to Washington, DC after marrying her husband, Jim, in 1967 where they started their family.  Sarah devoted most of her life to raising her children in Silver Spring, MD.  She obtained her Master’s degree in Theology from the Washington Theological Union while raising them.  When her youngest child started high school, she pursued her own career teaching theology at the Academy of the Holy Cross and Connelly School of the Holy Child until her retirement.

With her charismatic personality and boundless energy, Sarah made friends easily and was a devoted and loving friend.  She was a strong advocate for women’s involvement within the Catholic Church.  A gifted baker, Sarah enjoyed delivering baked goods to family and friends during the holidays and many of her children continue the tradition.

Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), on Thursday, December 28, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernadette’s Church, 72 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring, MD, on Friday, December 29, at 10 a.m.  Interment Private. On Friday, December 15, 2017, of Silver Spring, MD.  Beloved husband of Julia Markham; father of David, Laura, Steven, Nadine, Robert and Claudia; grandfather of Amanda, Eli, Kyle, Alice, Amelia, Zack, Amber, Joseph and Julia.  Also survived by many loving family members and friends.  Memorial Service will be Celebrated at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 633 Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, 20910, on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Private Inurnment at Parklawn Memorial Park at a later date.

Emerson Markham left us on December 15, 2017 at age 90, after a long, productive and loving life as a husband, father, and brother. Born in upstate New York, Emerson served in the U.S. Army after high school, then earned his B.A. from Union College and his M.A. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He moved to the Washington metropolitan area in the 1950s and entered government work. Emerson worked at many different federal agencies in his career, capped by stints as the Budget Director for the United States Post Office, Action (Peace Corps/Vista) and the Veterans Administration. He was a civil servant in the highest meaning of the phrase, and worked his whole life to make government function effectively and humanely. After retiring from the federal government, Emerson worked as a consultant to the National Academy for Public Administration. He traveled widely in this role, and was especially proud of his work to establish a functioning government in the Republic of Georgia. After living for four decades in Southern Prince Georges County, Emerson and Julia moved to the Riderwood retirement community, where he was an active and engaged resident, taking special interest in the scholarship fund for Riderwood employees, until his health failed. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Emerson’s memory may be made to the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, 200 Eggers Hall, Syracuse, NY, 13244, or to the charitable organization of your choice, in keeping with his vision for a better world.

Robert Lowell Jackson, a retired Washington correspondent for the Los Angeles Times died on Monday, December 18, 2017, at his home in Silver Spring, MD. Mr. Jackson, who worked for the newspaper for more than 35 years in Washington, and before that in Los Angeles, specialized in investigative reporting – writing about Watergate, Abscom, the South Korean influence case and the Monica Lewinsky and Whitewater affairs. He shared a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 1965 Watts riots in Los Angeles and the 1970 resignation of Abe Fortas from the Supreme Court – an effort that captured the national journalism award of Sigma Delta Chi. During his career Mr. Jackson won a Fullbright Scholarship to Copenhagen, Denmark in 1961 and a second Fullbright teaching grant to Russia in 2002. He is the beloved husband of the late Mary Jane Jackson; father of Julie Jackson Somers (Jim), Patti Jackson Snowden (Steve) and Peggy Jackson Tyler (Steve); grandfather of Kelsey Tyler and Drew Tyler; brother of Jane Jackson Houser, Eloise Jackson Tremusini and late Richard Jackson.Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Church, 10103 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
